On a cycle trip from London to Cornwall I ended up completing the journey with a photography collection that paid homage to the humble rural road sign
I love the simplicity of their design and instruction. The fingerposts in Dorset and Hampshire, which feature a circular finial (used since the early 1900s as a way of indicating which local authority was responsible for the maintenance of each sign) felt particularly comforting, as they reminded me of the London Underground roundel; the Dorset finial also includes a national grid reference as well.
These signs served their purpose and became a beacon of hope and relief in times of frequent geographical confusion, and despite some looking a little worse for wear or being almost completely hidden, I feel indebted and eternally grateful for their guidance.
